Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose Venture Speech?
I have extensive training in various settings including public school, private practice, home health, telehealth, aquatic therapy settings, and nature-based settings. I've worked with students from 12 months old- 90 years old. My therapy practice specializes in working with children from 12 months old- 18 years old. I am incredibly passionate about my field and about creating a plan to support your child. I am the only therapist at my practice and am able to give more of my time to my students compared to when I've worked for larger companies. I am consistent, efficient, and effective. Having a consistent therapist makes a huge difference! No high turnovers here, as I am not quitting on myself! I have worked with and graduated so many happy families! My therapy approach is unique. I like to practice skills in different community-based settings to ensure engagement, attention, and carryover of the newly learned speech skills. I find that many people enjoy my movement-based approach. I have a blast teaching this way too and am excited to show you how you can add movement to your teaching at home!
Why movement-based speech therapy?
Venture Speech employs a movement-based approach for several key reasons. Firstly, it aligns with a multi-modal learning strategy. Secondly, incorporating movement aims to promote the generalization of newly acquired communication skills beyond the therapy setting, fostering awareness and application of these skills during various activities, not just while seated.
Why nature speech therapy?
Nature-based therapy integrates nature to enhance children's development. I collaborate with Therapy in the Great Outdoors Community and various nature-based schools.
Benefits of Nature-Based Therapy:
Cognitive: Fosters curiosity, hands-on learning.
Emotional: Social-emotional benefits, mental health benefits.
Physical: Sensorimotor benefits, opportunities for risk-taking.
Practical: Easily accessible natural materials and resources.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
You do not need a doctor's referral for a speech evaluation that is private pay. If you have one from your doctor, you are welcome to send it over.
Do you have a waitlist?
No, I do not have a waitlist at this time. I currently have more weekday openings with summer approaching.
Can you collaborate with my child's other therapists or school-based team?
Yes, please! I love being a member of your child's team and believe we need to talk to other professionals so that we can understand your child fully. If you desire for me to work with your child's other therapists and school team, let me know and we can fill out a ROI release of information form.
What's the difference between speech therapy in the school VS private practice?
Speech therapists in schools and private practices hold the same qualifications. However, their goal-setting approaches differ. In schools, speech goals must align with Individualized Education Program (IEP) objectives set annually. Private practice allows for more flexible and adaptable goal adjustments based on a student's evolving needs.
Working in both public school and private practice settings offers unique advantages. School environments provide more opportunities for peer interaction and practice. Private practice offers individualized or group sessions. Contact me if you have further inquiries about these differences as I provide services in both settings. I believe students can benefit from speech therapy in both settings.
Do you accept insurance?
I'm currently in the process of joining the CO Health First Medicaid panel. Right now, I'm a private pay provider, which gives you flexibility in scheduling sessions without insurance restrictions. I accept HSA and FSA cards. If you're looking for more budget-friendly options, I have reduced-rate group sessions and shorter, more affordable individual sessions. I also work with Dynamic Therapy Services and can offer scholarships to families who qualify – please reach out if you are interested in applying. My priority is to make high quality movement-based speech therapy services accessible to everyone.
Why aquatic speech therapy?
I bring 7 years of experience in aquatic speech therapy, gained at various clinics, and currently partner with Wheat Ridge Rooted in Fun Rec Center to offer these services on Wednesday afternoons. A fun fact about me: I completed an evidence-based aquatic therapy course at Aquatic Therapy University.
Aquatic speech therapy offers numerous advantages:
Increased Motivation: Provides a stimulating change of environment for children.
Community Generalization: Offers an ideal setting to practice and apply speech skills.
Enhanced Engagement: Boosts participation and involvement.
Heightened Alertness: Water's buoyancy and surface tension alter movement resistance.
Improved Breath Support: Hydrostatic pressure provides beneficial compression.
Inclusive Participation: Creates an equitable environment for children of all abilities.
Effective Visual Modeling: Close proximity between therapist and child facilitates clear demonstrations of speech targets.
Am I allowed in therapy with my child?
Parents are always welcome to attend therapy sessions with their child. Some children thrive with a parent present, while others may focus better independently. In cases where parents are not in the session, a thorough review of skills and activities will be provided at the end of each session to facilitate practice at home.
What does a typical session look like?
Each therapy session starts with a family check-in to discuss successes and challenges since the previous meeting. The session then involves movement-based activities like rock climbing, communication skill practice during book narration, and play-based engagement. As a child-led therapist, I prioritize your child's interests while strategically incorporating their communication goals into activities and play. We conclude by outlining practice activities for home before our next session.
What's the typical duration of therapy?
Care plan durations vary; I typically create them for 6 months. Some students achieve mastery sooner, while others require more time. Progress is reviewed around the 6-month mark to adjust goals as needed.
