Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose Venture Speech?
At Venture Speech, we are passionate about speech therapy and creating a plan to support your child. We set our schedule here to allow for more time for our speech therapists to give session reviews and practice ideas for in between sessions. We built this practice to suit our needs and are consistent. There are no high turn overs here! We have worked with and graduated so many happy families!
Our therapy approach is unique, offering an opportunity to practice communication skills in various community-based settings to ensure engagement, attention, and carryover of speech skills. We find that many people enjoy our movement-based approach. We have a blast teaching this way too and are excited to show you how you can add movement to your teaching at home!
What's the difference between speech therapy in the school and private practice?
Speech therapists in schools and private practices hold the same qualifications! Students need to be evaluated and qualify for special education services and receive speech therapy services under their IEP. In the school, the student needs to be impacted both academically and socially by their communication challenges. In schools, speech goals must align with Individualized Education Program (IEP) objectives set annually.
In private practice students are evaluated and a care plan is made based on the student's communication area of need. In private practice, goal adjustments may take place every 3, 6, or 12 months.
School environments provide more opportunities for peer interaction and interaction with teachers and academics. Private practices can offer individual or group sessions and can be held in an environment better suited to your child's sensory needs.
Contact me if you have further inquiries about these differences as I provide services in both settings. I believe students can benefit from speech therapy in both settings!
Why movement-based speech therapy?
Venture Speech sessions often involve a movement-based approach. This approach aligns with a multi-modal learning strategy, using gestures to support our learning! We desire to promote the generalization of newly acquired communication skills beyond the therapy setting, fostering awareness and application of these skills during various activities, not just while seated. We also take into consideration that people listen differently, for some students, movement supports alertness and engagement.
Do you accept insurance?
No. I am a private pay provider, which gives you flexibility in scheduling sessions without insurance restrictions. I accept HSA and FSA cards and can offer superbills. I also work with Dynamic Therapy Services and can offer scholarships to families who qualify. Please reach out if you are interested in applying. My priority is to make high quality movement-based speech therapy services accessible to everyone.
Why nature speech therapy?
Nature-based therapy integrates nature to enhance children's development.
I collaborate with Therapy in the Great Outdoors Community and various nature-based schools.
Benefits of Nature-Based Therapy-
Cognitive: Fosters curiosity, hands-on learning.
Emotional: Social-emotional benefits, mental health benefits.
Physical: Sensorimotor benefits, opportunities for risk-taking.
Practical: Easily accessible natural materials and resources.
Why aquatic speech therapy?
We bring 8 years of experience in aquatic speech therapy, gained at various clinics, and currently partner with Wheat Ridge Rooted in Fun Rec Center to offer these services. A fun fact about SLP Taylor: I completed an evidence-based aquatic therapy course at Aquatic Therapy University.
Aquatic speech therapy offers numerous advantages:
Increased Motivation: Provides a stimulating change of environment for children.
Community Generalization: Offers an ideal setting to practice and apply speech skills.
Enhanced Engagement: Boosts participation and involvement.
Heightened Alertness: Water's buoyancy and surface tension alter movement resistance.
Improved Breath Support: Hydrostatic pressure provides beneficial compression.
Inclusive Participation: Creates an equitable environment for children of all abilities.
Effective Visual Modeling: Close proximity between therapist and child facilitates clear demonstrations of speech targets.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
You do not need a doctor's referral for a speech evaluation that is private pay. If you have one from your doctor, you are welcome to send it over.
Am I allowed in therapy with my child?
Parents are always welcome to attend therapy sessions with their child. Some children thrive with a parent present, while others may focus better independently. In cases where parents are not in the session, a thorough review of skills and activities will be provided at the end of each session to facilitate practice at home.
Do you have a waitlist?
Yes, our schedule is full. Please join the waitlist to be contacted as soon as an appointment is available.
What does a typical session look like?
Each therapy session starts with a family check-in to discuss successes and challenges since the previous meeting. The SLP then reviews the target for the day with visual cues and the SLP and student devise an activity plan to target the goal of the day. The session often involves movement-based activities such as rock climbing, swinging, hiking, swimming. We often use books in our therapy sessions to target our goals. We conclude by outlining practice activities for home before our next session.
Can you collaborate with my child's other therapists or school-based team?
Yes, please! We love being a member of your child's team and see the benefit in collaborating with other professionals so that we can understand your child fully. If you wish for us to work with your child's other therapists and/or school team, let us know so and we can fill out an ROI release of information form.
What's the typical duration of therapy?
Care plan durations vary. We typically create care plans for 6-12 months. Some students achieve mastery sooner, while others require more time. Progress is reviewed around the 6-month mark to adjust goals as needed.
